ONE of the country’s most improved schools has taken another step in its rejuvenation after officially becoming an academy.

The former Branksome School, which seven years ago was branded as failing by Government inspectors, has become a self-governing academy.

It comes on the back of improved Ofsted inspections, becoming a specialist school now known as the Darlington School of Mathematics and Science, and last summer pupils recording the best exams result in its history.

Darlington MP Jenny Chapman recently joined staff and students to officially launch its status as a self-governing academy.

It has cut its ties with the borough council and is now part of the Longfield Academy Trust.

Mrs Chapman said: “The transformation has been absolutely astounding.” Chairman of governors Dr David Hall said: “Given the hard work of staff, the enthusiasm of students and the opportunities that academy status affords, there is no limit to how far this school can now go.”

Academy status will be completed with a £2m makeover of the building and an overhaul of the curriculum
