TRADERS who got into the festive spirit by decorating their market stalls have been rewarded for their efforts.

The National Market Traders' Federation held a competition earlier this month to find the best dressed Christmas market stall in the outdoor and covered markets.

This week, Darlington's MP Jenny Chapman presented the winners with their prizes.

First prize in the Covered Market section went to Market News newsagents, which has donated its £50 prize to charity. Runners-up prizes of £25 went to More Good Books book stall and Fenwick's butcher.

In the outdoor market, Samantha Murray jewellery stall won the £50 first prize. Runners-up were Angela's burger van and Cherrywell Cakes cupcake stall, which each also won £25.

Mrs Chapman said: "The markets are an essential part of Darlington's town centre. The traders always go that extra mile to welcome residents and visitors of Darlington at Christmas time, offering great quality and value."
