JUDGES have pored over dozens of entries in the search for the winners of the annual Best of Darlington Awards.

A total of 72 entries were submitted across 11 categories for the awards, which honour the best achievements of unsung heroes in the town.

The judging panel met on Monday to choose the winners and select other entries for commendation.

They also selected an overall citizen and young citizen of the year.

Peter Barron, editor of The Northern Echo and chairman of the judging panel, said there were some great stories among the entries.

The winners will be announced on Friday, March 23, at Darlington College. It is the seventh ceremony for an awards scheme borne out of the town’s Citizen of the Year accolade.

The categories include contribution to the community – one for adults and one for children – sport, the arts, business and the environment.

There are three student awards – for academic excellence, vocational excellence and exceptional student.

Awards also go to volunteer of the year and in the Putting Darlington on the Map category, for someone who has made the rest of the country aware of the town.

A separate category for the Darlington Thru The Lens photography section will be judged separately.

The theme is regeneration.

Entries must be received by January 14. For more details see darlington.org.uk/photo comp.htm
