THE bomb squad were called after a plumber found a grenade while working in a derelict house.

At about 10.41am explosives experts travelled from Catterick Garrison to a derelict house on Bedford Street in Darlington after the plumber, who was working in the loft of the house, made the discovery.

The grenade was found to be a training device and was inactive. Residents of the houses around the property had been evacuated but were allowed back into their homes at about noon.
