AN Indian restaurant has made it through to the regional final of a competition after being nominated by a local MP.
Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland, said that she was delighted that the Bengal Merchant restaurant in Barnard Castle won a place in the regional final of the 2011 Lyca Tiffin Cup competition.
The Lyca Tiffin Cup is a national competition held every year to find the best South Asian Restaurant in the country. This year 60 restaurants were nominated by MPs, and the Bengal Merchant will go head to head with other restaurants in the North East to become one of the national finalists of the competition.
In the next few weeks a mystery diner will visit the restaurant to judge the cuisine to see if it deserves a place in the national final.
Mrs Goodman said: "I am delighted that my nomination for the Bengal Merchant has been recognised. I hope that the Bengal Merchant will be chosen to represent our region in the grand final.
"I’m sure everyone in Barnard Castle will be supporting the restaurant."
