A COUNCIL has formally confirmed its intention to consult on closing six leisure centres in the region.
Durham County Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss the issue, after the proposals were revealed in The Northern Echo on Monday.
Centres in Ferryhill, Coxhoe and Sherburn as well as Glenholm in Crook, Deerness in Ushaw Moor and Abbey in Pity Me could close if third party operators cannot be found.
The closures could save £1.2m a year as the council struggles to make wider savings of £125m over four years On Wednesday the council will also state the case for its new sport and leisure strategy.
