A CYCLIST was found dead lying alongside his bike on a remote path near a quarry today.

Police said a man making his way to work at the quarry, in Quarrington Hill, south-east of Durham, made the discovery, shortly before 7.45am.

The cyclist who appeared to be in his 40s, was laying next to his bike, which still had its light on.

A Durham force spokesman said efforts are now being made to identify the cyclist, but there was no indication he had been involved in an accident.

"Judging by his clothing and the rucksack he was carrying police believe the cyclist was probably on his to work.

"There is nothing at this stage to suggest he was subject of a road collision.

"It is thought he may have suddenly been taken ill as he was riding his bike.

"Police are examining the scene and trying to identify the deceased so his next of kin can be traced."
