A 21-YEAR-OLD man is seriously ill in hospital after he was attacked by at least two people on Friday night.
The man suffered serious head injuries after being attacked on an access road off Genesis Way, in Consett, County Durham - in an area known locally as The Heaps.
Police believe the incident happened between 8pm and 9pm.
The victim, who has not been named but is from the Consett area, was taken to University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, before being transferred to Newcastle General Hospital.
He remains unconscious and heavily sedated. Police say it could be some time before the full extent of his injuries is known.
It is thought the attackers walked off towards a nearby McDonald's restaurant.
