Smiles and tears as students pick up A-Level results

THOUSANDS of students around the region are trying to secure their university places after receiving their A-Level results.

Record numbers of applicants are competing for places this year Most universities in the North-East and North Yorkshire have warned they will have fewer spare places than last year, while elsewhere in the country several universities say they are already full.

In Durham, there were smiles all round as students at St Leonard's RC School, opened their results.

Alex Brown, from Durham, scored A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and an A in Religious Studies.

The 18-year-old plans to study nearby, pursuing a Maths degree at Durham University.

He said: "It's been a lot of hard work over the two years. The A* grade has distinguished the best of the best, but I wonder where it will stop - will there be an A**?"

Headteacher Simon Campbell said: "We're delighted with the results. They're a good year group but even so they've performed very well.

"I think particularly with the added pressure this year of knowing the demand for university places was high, they have done very well."
