A CASTLE resounded to the sounds of battle at the weekend as one of the defining military encounters in the region’s history was recreated.
Musket fire and the clash of pikes were once again heard in Sunderland when up to 1,000 people dressed in Civil War costumes reenacted the Battle of Hylton Castle.
The display recalled events in 1644, when 2,500 soldiers were killed as invading Scottish forces backing Parliament defeated a Royalist garrison in Sunderland.
The living history, provided by the Sealed Knot re-enactment society, also portrayed life in camp for 17th Century soldiers.
