Golfers chip in to help soldiers’ charity

GOLFERS in the region have been doing their bit to help 3 Rifles troops.

Members of Ramside Hall Golf Club, near Durham City, raised more than £800 for the 3 Rifles Wristband Appeal by putting their change in tins in the clubhouse, as well as at Roseberry Leisure Club in Sunderland, and the Stackyard pub in Herrington, near Houghtonle- Spring.

Yesterday, businessman and chairman of Ramside Hall Golf Club Graham Storey handed over a cheque for £802.62 to Captain Martin Gamblin from 3 Rifles.

It is the latest fundraising event organised by Mr Storey, who owns a security company. Earlier in the year an auction at Ramside Golf Club raised £2,400, with lots including tickets to Sunderland Football Club matches and signed sports memorabilia. The summer will also see a golf day for 120 people and a private dinner, both in aid of the 3 Rifles Wristband Appeal.

Mr Storey said: “You only have to talk to any of the guys that serve in places like Afghanistan to realise what a job they do.

“If they come back injured or in need of help they need money straight away – they can’t wait for the Government to help.

“Everyone at the golf club has just jumped on board the idea of helping 3 Rifles and it feels good to do our bit.”

Capt Gamblin said: “The Rifles have come out of Afghanistan and we have come out of the limelight, which is fine.

“Those soldiers who have lost limbs still need care, so this type of fundraising is so important and we really do appreciate it.”

The Northern Echo is supporting the 3 Rifles appeal and wristbands are available for sale at our offices in Darlington and Bishop Auckland.
