CD REVIEWS: Paul Motian/Lost in a dream (ECM 2732132) This trio, with Chris Potter on tenor saxophone and Jason Moran piano, was recorded at New York’s Village Vanguard last year. A couple of freer improvisations interrupt a group of Motian’s songs which contain some of the most thoughtful and considered playing, with Potter and Moran at their very best supported by Motian’s deceptively minimal drums.

Chick Corea/Piano Solo (ECM 2719652) Another delightful three-CD box set in ECM’s Old and New Masters series restores Chick Corea’s trail-blazing solo albums to the catalogue. The two volume Improvisations date from 1971 and Children’s Songs from 1983. Delicate, but often complex too, and clearly recorded, they now also have the benefit of helpful notes and photos.

Bunk Johnson/Bunk’s Blues (Upbeat URCD235) This is the ideal introduction to the New Orleans trumpeter’s short but intense recording career. It ranges from his first session in 1942 with George Lewis to his last with Garvin Bushell in New York in 1947. Mike Pointon’s detailed and authoritative notes are a great help too.
