Greatest Cities With Griff Rhys Jones (ITV1, 9pm); How the Other Half Live (C4, 9pm); Psychoville (Dave, 10.20pm)

GRIFF RHYS JONES rattles off a story about swimming with sharks in Sydney. It segues into another anecdote of owl catching, he then digresses to praise the city’s fine architecture (“It’s like Finchley stuck down by the ocean”), before returning again to shark swimming.

He certainly seems to be enjoying his world tours on behalf of ITV1 for his Greatest Cities series, although he’s currently straying no further than the stage of the London Palladium, where he’s playing Fagin in the musical, Oliver!

Tonight, he’s down under in Sydney – and he admits some citizens of the city were not quite so taken with him.

Asked to be a guest caller at a meat raffle in a social club, Griff filled in the gaps between numbers with jokes and anecdotes – much to the chagrin of the seasoned players.

“One old biddy said on the way out, ‘If that bloke ever turns up to do the raffle again I am resigning from this club’,” he recalls.

Luckily, Griff ’s mission statement is not to make friends, but rather to make a programme which is not just another travel documentary.

He calls himself a city person. “If I visit a city like Milan or Turin that I’ve never been to before, I’ll spend about 48 hours just walking because my favourite thing to do is to walk in a city.”
