I CANNOT understand the enthusiasm with which correspondents argue over who will win the General Election as we will still be ruled effectively by Brussels.

EU law will still take precedence over English statute law; our government cannot support a failing industry by tax concessions because that constitutes “protectionism”; and the EU commissioners, seeking to regularise VAT rules, may insist we tax such things as books and children’s clothing, hitherto exempt.

Of course, this election must centre on filling our enormous budget hole, but what if the commissioners object to how we set out to do this?

Our last government signed the Maastricht Treaty, handing sovereignty to Brussels without consulting the electorate for which they should have been impeached.

The Liberal Democrats seek to strengthen the EU chains and change our currency to the euro.

The Conservatives promise a referendum on all future EU developments, which is something, but too little and too late.

Our destiny is no longer in our own hands, but in those of the EU commissioners, our only protection the veto which they are trying to abolish.

Only decisive action which will draw the teeth of the Beast of Brussels will give meaning to future elections and ensure we are governed by people over whom we have some control.
