Darlington could become a Fairtrade town by the end of the year.

Fairtrade gives people the chance to buy products which were bought directly from farmers in the Third World at better prices.

Darlington Borough Council is trying to ensure Fairtrade coffee is the only coffee on offer at all its venues - including Stressholme Golf Club, the Dolphin Centre, the Arts Centre and the Town Hall - by the end of the year.

Fairtrade fortnight started on Monday. There will be stalls at the town's Farmers' Market on Friday, March 17, manned by volunteers who will be promoting the cause and products.

Bondgate Methodist Church will have Fairtrade crafts and foods on sale throughout the fortnight and Darlington's Millennium Volunteers are holding a Fairtrade coffee morning on Sunday, March 19, at 4 Beaumont Street from 10am to 1pm.
