TAXI drivers in Darlington have been given the go-ahead to use town centre bus lanes in an experimental order.
On Tuesday, Darlington Borough Council gave in to the cabbies' demands to use the lanes, prompted by the council's £6.5m Pedestrian Heart project.
Its decision comes despite concerns from the police and bus companies that the move could put passenger safety in jeopardy.
Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "A strong case can be made to use those (town centre) bus lanes for the benefits of them-selves.
"It carefully considers the effects of road safety."
Taxi drivers will be able to drive in the Coniscliffe Road and Stonebridge/St Cuthbert's Way lanes.
A full audit of the decision will be made during the experiment, which could last for up to 18 months.
