PLANS for a community hall are expected to be approved by councillors next week.

Darlington Borough Council has received an application for the demolition of the old wooden village hall, in Bishopton.

A new hall would be built in its place, incorporating a store, kitchen and toilets.

The existing building is a timber schoolhouse, relocated in the late 1950s for use as the village facility.

The matter will be considered by the council's planning committee next Wednesday.

Bishopton Parish Council has no complaints, although Darlington Association on Disability said that disabled access provision was not clear from the plans.

Local residents who have objected are concerned that the new building may not be keeping with the village.

However, town hall officers are recommending that the scheme is approved and conservation area consent given for the demolition.
