PEOPLE across Teesside are being urged to report bonfire builders.

The move is a bid to protect lives and property in the run up to November 5.

George Crooks, arson task force manager with Cleveland Fire Brigade, explained: "No-one wants to spoil Bonfire Night fun for youngsters.

"However, everyone should be aware of the dangers and cost associated with lighting bonfires illegally.

"We would ask the public to be vigilant and report any such incidents.''

Leaflets are to be distributed in the area, urging residents to report illegal bonfires.

Cleveland Fire Brigade is working with Cleveland Police, the four borough councils and local schools.

Firefighters put out 719 bonfires in the main three-week bonfire period last year, at a cost of at least £350 a time to council tax payers.

Trading Standards partners are also targeting illegal firework sales.

To report bonfire building and illegal firework sales, people are asked to ring Hartlepool (01429) 523333, Middlesbrough (01642) 726001, Stockton (01642) 391959 or Redcar and Cleveland (0800) 0131357.
