A FOUR-WEEK festival of literature comes to a dramatic climax this weekend with a look back into the folklore of the North-East.

Storyteller Chris Bostock will delve into the legends of Durham City when he performs at Age Bar, in Claypath, on Sunday, October 23 as part of the Durham Literature Festival.

Among the intriguing tales retold during the free evening will be the legend of Agnes Grainger Edwards, who was found on the doorstep of a pub more than 200 years ago wrapped in a red shawl and clutching a wooden crucifix.

During the performance, entitled Maid In Durham, Chris will explore several more of the city's most enduring legends.

On Monday, Chris will return to the stage alongside poet Jane Hirshfield at The Gala Theatre for the festival finale.

The event starts at 7pm with a performance by the visionary American poet.

Alison Lister, festivals co-ordinator for Durham City Arts, said: "Having Jane Hirshfield to close this year's festival is a wonderful tribute to the festival's achievements.

"We have enjoyed a month of fabulous literary entertainment that has seen some very big names take to the stage in Durham."

The entertainment is completed by the festival ceilidh, starting at 8.30pm, featuring words and music from Chris Bostock, Tim Dalling and the Dog Leap Stars.

Tickets for the finale are £7 for adults and £4 for concessions and can be booked on 0191-332 4041.
