Durham University suffered their second defeat of the season - their first at home - when they were beaten 3-1 by Southport in the North Men's Hockey League, Premier Division.

John Crewe, University coach, said: "We were unlucky not to have got something out out of the game. We scored first and then hit a post when we were 2-1 down - but we are not very cohesive at the moment."

City of York drew 1-1 at home to Hull and Harrogate edged Doncaster seconds 4-3.

There is still no joy for Norton who lost 8-1 at home to Deesside Ramblers and the Teesside club remain at the foot of Division One without a point.

In the same division, Durham University seconds won 1-0 at Neston.

Division Two (East): Brigg 1, Gateshead 5; Rotherham 0, Tynemouth 1; Sheffield University Bankers 2nds 2, Newcastle University 3; Stockton 0, City of York 2nds 0.

l Hild Bede Men's Hockey Club, who swept all before them in Division Four of the North East League last season with a goal difference of over 100, have begun a new campaign impressively.

But the students are short of cash and are seeking any kind of backing.

Neil Salmond, secretary and vice-captain, said: "We have sent out quite a few letters but nothing positive has materialised and with this year's fresher additions being the most for some time our treasurer's job is growing steadily all the more difficult.''

The students last victory came on Saturday when they came from a 1-0 half-time deficit to win 3-2 against Marton Furness.

Their only defeat has been against Durham City 2nds, beaten 1-0 by a late goal. They have gained wins over Tynedale, Norton 3rds - both by double figures - and Newcastle University 4ths.

lIf anyone can give the students a helping financial hand then call captain Ed Ellwood on 07977-467481.
