Karl and Kelvin Armstrong completed a remarkable double when each secured national boxing titles when fighting on the same bill at the weekend.

And what makes their achievement even more outstanding is the fact it was their maiden voyage in a national tournament while their club was also in uncharted waters.

Craghead ABC are coming to the end of their first full season, so to produce two national champions is a great feat.

That is the view of coach Michael Mason, who said: "It is great for the club because we've only been going for a short while compared to some of the others up here, and for the two lads it's excellent."

Karl, 14, took a majority points decision to win a schoolboy title (52k) at the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday when he came up against City of Portsmouth's John Creamer who received huge vocal backing from the 1000-strong crowd.

But Karl wasn't phased. "It spurred him on, it worked in his favour," said Michael. "He's a confident lad. Karl wanted to win for his family and for himself."

An hour later, 17-year-old Kelvin recovered from receiving a first round standing count before beating Simon Doherty of Cambridge ABC to win the junior ABA cruiser-weight bout.

"Doherty was a big lad and took some beating, but Kelvin just picked him off with the jab and he was a bit quicker on his feet," said Michael.

"I think he (Kelvin) knew he'd won when he came back to the corner at the end of the bout."

On Wednesday night, Michael's son Mick notched up an excellent win at Stanley Central Club when he beat British number two Nick Bonnetti from Scotland.

The Scottish champion is a Four Nations Silver Medalist but lost every round to Mason, 19, whose record now stands at seven wins from nine bouts.
