COUNTRYSIDE sites deemed safe despite the foot-and-mouth crisis are re-opening today.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is opening sites at Flatts Lane, Normanby, and Guisborough Branch Walkway. The move follows the completion of risk assessments in conjunction with the Forestry Commission and the North York Moors National Park, as well as consultations with local farmers. But there will still be some restrictions at both venues. The council's parks and countryside manager, Ged Dernoily, said: "We are pleased to be able to announce the reopening of the two countryside sites. We would ask the public to call in at each site's visitor centre if they have any concerns about where to walk. Staff will help and guide them."
The council's planned walking festival, scheduled for next month, is being reorganised for September, and the Coast and Country Festival of Walking has been changed from June to September 7 to 9. Mr Demoily said: "We feel it is better to postpone the festival to ensure it can go ahead in its entirety."
The council will be contacting everyone who has already booked, offering the new dates or a refund. Updated details of footpath reopenings can be accessed at www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
