A CAMPAIGN to cut casualties on a dangerous road is being repeated following its earlier success.

At the end of March, Cleveland Police launched Operation Moor Road to target dangerous drivers on the A171 Moor Road, from Swans Corner to the force boundary at Scaling Dam.

Traffic officers linked up with police to monitor the road in a video car in a bid to curb the high incidence of accidents.

During the past four years, there have been 64 collisions, in which five people have been killed and 87 injured, 18 seriously.

Langbaurgh Inspector Tom Brown said: "The last operation was quite successful - 72 drivers were dealt with for various things like speeding, not being in proper control, dangerous driving and drink driving. Now we are going to do it again as part of a continuing process."

Insp Brown said four signs will be put up reminding drivers of the number of casualties at various points and that other measures, such as junction alterations are being looked at.

He said: "Problems usually occur on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and many are caused by vehicles turning right.

"I intend to compare the number of accidents under the operation with last year."
