THE Moscow State Circus has arrived in the North-East for the first time in six years.

The world-renowned performers held their first shows in Darlington last night under the Big Top in South Park.

There will be two performances every night until Sunday when the troop will move on to Scotland.

The circus was entirely funded by the state during the Communist years, but that funding has reduced dramatically and the artists now have to make a living overseas.

General manager Paul Archer said: "Because of the state funding the artists are very good at what they do.

"They never had to worry about earning a living in the past because it was all there for them, right through to their pension.

"That's why they are far superior to anything in the West."

The show includes a flying trapeze, jugglers, wire walkers and clowns.

Mr Archer said: "It's suitable for the whole family, not just children - it's for adults, parents and grandparents."

This is the second time the Moscow State Circus has toured the UK. The last time they were here, in 1995, they visited Middlesbrough. This is the first time they have been to Darlington.

Performances will be at 5pm and 8pm from tonight to Friday, and 2pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The arena sits 1,000 and some tickets are being held back for people who want to turn up on the day, although weekend shows are expected to be busy.
