POLICE are keen to trace a Samurai sword which was stolen from a car.

The sword was taken as part of a spate of thefts from cars in the Haughton Road area of Darlington, overnight between Sunday and Monday.

It is described as a training weapon for the martial arts.

Police believe the theft was not pre-planned and are anxious to trace the weapon.

Three cars were broken into in Essex Way, Somerset Grove and Gloucester Place, between 8pm on Sunday and 8am on Monday. Among others items stolen was a stereo.

Detective Sergeant Alec Francis, of Darlington police, said: "It is likely that the sword was stolen just because it was visible in the car and we would like to hear from witnesses or anyone with information which could help us recover it."

Police can be contacted on (01325) 467681.
