TIME is fast running out for community groups wishing to enter the The Northern Echo's Making A Difference competition.

The competition for environmental projects, sponsored by regional development agency One NorthEast, is in its third year.

Environmentalist David Bellamy, who lives in County Durham, has agreed to present the prizes in the autumn.

The latest entry is from Ramshaw Community Association, in the west Durham community, which has raised £54,000 to transform a rundown area into a park and play area for the local community.

Association members have launched an additional project after winning a grant from BT which represents part-funding towards creating a community link with the Internet.

Ann Lyons, of the association, said: "We are a remote village but we would still like to bring technology into the community."

Making A Difference is open to groups or individuals and the winner of this year's competition receives £500. The closing date is next Wednesday.
