North-East world triple-jump champion Jonathan Edwards's competing days are far from over, his proud father said last night.
Speaking after the 35-year-old scooped the World Athletics gold in Canada with a winning leap of 17.92m, the Reverend Andy Edwards said he believed his son still had at least one big jump left to come.
The rector of Moresby, near Whitehaven, added: "He is not retiring. While he enjoys it he will continue."
Jonathan, who lives with his wife and two children in Gosforth, Tyneside, said after yesterday's victory: "I am 35 so get injured more easily. However, I feel I have a big jump in me when it matters."
It mattered in Edmonton and he produced his biggest leap in three years to claim Britain's first medal of the championship. He is due back in the North-East later this week.
