A TEENAGER had to undergo major surgery after he was the victim of what police have described as an unprovoked attack.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the assault, which happened when the 16-year-old was walking home with a friend, in Middlesbrough, at 2am on October 19.

They were approached from behind by a gang, one of whom was swinging a chain.

He attacked the teenager with the weapon, causing severe injuries to his eyes. His friend ran after the attacker, but he got away in Linthorpe Road.

The 16-year-old was admitted to Middlesbrough General Hospital, but later transferred to the eye unit at North Riding Infirmary, Middlesbrough, where he underwent surgery.

It is thought that his sight has been saved. He also suffered a broken cheekbone and nose in the attack.

It is thought that the attacker was about 19, 5ft 10in, and of slim build. He had a pale complexion and could have been wearing white make-up.

He had shoulder-length hair and was dressed all in a black, possibly with a long black coat.
