OLDER people in Darlington are to have a say on how the future of the community is shaped, thanks to a new strategy.

A total of 450 older people from a variety of backgrounds were asked for their comments and ideas on what issues were important to them, how services could work better and how they could become involved in shaping the future.

Other agencies and organisations were also questioned on the same issues by Peter Fletcher Associates, on behalf of Darlington Borough Council and Local Health, in an effort to create the council's new Strategy for Growing Older.

The consultation exercise revealed that older people wanted to remain independent, and have opportunities for physical activities, and arts, culture and education.

They also wanted to reduce social isolation, because 56 per cent said attitudes to older people were negative. More accessible transport, buildings and services, as well as better communication, were also identified.

A steering group of five older people and five council staff used the results to draft the strategy, which aims to improve the quality of life for older people.

It also aims to ensure their views are acknowledged and needs met, that opportunities are provided for them to become involved in improving services, and that there are opportunities to participate in the community as useful and respected citizens.

An action plan is also included in the strategy to take it forward and identify the resources needed to achieve the vision
