A PARISH council is supporting proposals to build two car dealerships on the outskirts of a village.

Sadberge Parish Council has backed plans, submitted to Darlington Borough Council, to create two car dealerships nearby.

The South Cleveland Garages scheme includes the demolition of the derelict Ivanhoe service station, on the A66 bypass.

Clerk to Sadberge Parish Council, Alan Parks, said: "The council have not looked at the plans yet, but I can't see there being any opposition.

"There is no impact on housing, there is no impact on traffic and the roads."

Bill Robson of South Cleveland Garages said the plans for the two-acre site would bring employment to the area

He said: "It's a derelict service station employing nobody and it could become two dealerships employing 50 to 60 people."

The company employs 174 people on sites in Middlesbrough and Darlington and its turnover last year was £40m. It already has dealerships with five car manufacturers and it is, as yet, uncertain who will be the dealers on the new site.
