A study has identified several potential sites for future housing developments in the Hambleton district.
Parish councils, North Yorkshire County Council and the Housebuilders' Federation are being asked for their views on the draft version of the Hambleton urban capacity study.
The document has revealed sites which could provide 1,467 homes on developed land, throu-gh conversions of space above shops and commercial buildings.
Hambleton District Council says there is a need to provide 2,759 homes in the district by 2016 - leaving a current shortfall of 1,292.
Councillors said that although they were aware of greenfield sites that could accommodate the shortfall, those sites had to be assessed against Government guidance as part of the review of Hambleton's district-wide local plan.
Planning spokesman Councillor Denis Howey said: "This study does not commit any of these sites for development, but considers that they have the potential for housing over the next 14 years.
