Mowden Park's Under-17 boys' team met strong Sunderland opponents at home this weekend and lost by a narrow margin of 21-24. In the first half, Mowden had the edge.

After 30 minutes Mowden Park's Rik Smith scored the opening try that was converted by Luke Tinkler. This set the standard and laid down the challenge to Sunderland who quickly replied with a converted try. Not daunted, Mowden came back with another try from Oliver Blackburn which was again converted by Tinkler. At this point Mowden had a seemingly secure lead but another try from the visitors closed the first half 14-12.

After half time Sunderland came back fighting, determined to make more of the play and take the lead. At first Mowden seemed to be constantly defending and strong attacking play from Sunderland resulted in two more tries, one of which was converted. At 24-12 it didn't look good for Mowden but superb running from captain Jonathon Cherrington and the quick hands of Steve Holborough resulted in Luke Tinkler scoring a well deserved try.

Tinkler's conversion put the Mowden squad back into contention and minutes before the end a powerful drive almost resulted in another try, which would have given a Mowden win. However, luck was not on their side; the promised try did not materialise.
