THE story behind the Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be told as part of a series of events offering insights into the history of Tyneside.

Dozens of activities and events are on offer as part of National History Month, which starts next Thursday, and runs until Sunday, June 1.

As well as finding out the story of the bridge, people can also have an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Baltic Arts Centre.

There will be walks and talks, explaining the fascinating and sometimes gory past of the area, plus help and advice on starting a family tree.

Last year's Local History Week attracted more than 1,000 people to 30 events, and organiser Gateshead Council hopes this year's programme will be even more popular.

All the events are free, but some require booking in advance. For further details, call Gateshead Council's Quays Visitor Centre on 0191-477 5380.
