POLICE are mounting a high-security operation to stem potential disorder among rival fans at tomorrow's Tyne and Wear derby match.

Northumbria Police hope the last Sunderland and Newcastle clash for at least a year, due to the Black Cats' impending relegation, passes peacefully.

Similar security measures are being put in place for the Stadium of Light clash as were seen at the recent England against Turkey game in Sunderland.

Although 106 arrests were made, none were for alcohol-related offences, and licensees in the city centre and near the stadium have earned praise for helping to prevent disorder.

Licensed premises in the central area and in the vicinity of the ground have been asked to employ door staff before and after the game, while drinks must be served in plastic containers.

A radio-link between police and publicans, via the city's Pubwatch network, will be in operation to allow information on unruly groups to be passed on quickly.

Licensees have also been told that police will have a high-visibility presence on the city streets before and after the match.

* The brother of a murdered Leeds United fan has appeared before Sunderland magistrates charged with a public order offence which allegedly took place prior to the recent England game against Turkey.

Andrew Stuart Loftus, 32, was among 106 people arrested in Sunderland during the day of the Euro 2004 qualifier, on April 2.

The case was adjourned and Mr Loftus, of Harehills Park Avenue, Leeds, was bailed to return to court in four weeks.

His brother, Christopher, 37, died from stab wounds three years ago after he was attacked by locals on the eve of United's Uefa Cup tie against Galatasaray in Istanbul.
