Darlington Football Club fans will be able to toast the end of an era at the club's Feethams ground today with a beer brewed for the occasion.

Darlington Supporters' Trust teamed up with local members of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) to help develop Feethams Farewell beer, which will be served at selected pubs in the town.

Darlington Camra launched the ale last month at its beer festival and now Darwin Brewery's special edition ale will be featuring in the celebrations of the Feethams finale.

The idea for the brew, to mark the Quakers' move from Feethams after 120 years, came from the trust.

Peter Ashmore, from the trust, said: "More than a few fans will be raising a glass to the old ground and so we thought, what's better than our own beer?

"We hope Feethams Farewell will be a little like the stadium - full of character and something to remember after it is gone."

The ale will be available at pubs and stockists including The Quaker and the Railway Tavern, in Darlington, the Bay Horse, Great Smeaton, the Crown at Manfield, the Baydale Beck, Low Coniscliffe, and the Chequers, Dalton-on-Tees.

Camra, which has done a lot of the work to get the brew off the ground, says stocks will be limited and are likely to go quickly.

The trust is helping to organise a parade of players and an awards evening to coincide with today's final match. Its Farewell to Feethams photographic and memorabilia exhibition is on tour in Stockton-on-Tees.

Keith Thomas, of the Darwin Brewery in Sunderland, said: "Feethams Farewell is a bright, hoppy beer with a snappy carbonation and lingering bitterness. It is made using pale malt with a touch of crystal for a light tang and with Northern Brewer and Cascade hops, fermented with a Californian yeast."
