PLANS to give cyclists and pedestrians a safer route to two schools have upset neighbours who fear the area will become the noisy haunt of skateboarders.

Harrogate Borough Council wants to make life for cyclists and walkers more attractive and convenient throughout and already has several miles of bike lanes in the area.

It is now planning a route connecting Rossett Drive and Green Lane, and giving safer access to Rossett School.

A survey has shown that while only between four and six per cent of pupils use their bikes to get to school at present, as many as 33 per cent would favour taking to the saddle if it was safer.

The route has been attacked by residents and they have outlined their worries to councillors, who have been recommended by council officers to support the plan.

Residents say that ramps on the route will encourage skateboarding and scooter-riding, and bring conflict with local dog walkers, as well as increasing noise levels.

The Ramblers' Association has also lodged a protest, claiming the route will detract from the enjoyment of an existing right of way which would be swallowed up along with a strip of the school playing field.

However, council officials say the route, which would also serve nearby Ashville College, will help to encourage sustainable travel and reduce congestion and pollution.
