DURHAM's new credit union hopes to boost membership by organising payroll deductions.

The Durham City and District Credit Union has attracted more than 70 members since it started life at the turn of the year.

It now has three collection points - it hopes to establish more - and hopes major employers will take part in a payroll deduction scheme.

Union spokesman Tony Tribe said: "We have already talked to the county council and made overtures to the city council. Once we have got one of those on board we can go to other employers.

"One or two have expressed an interest and they want to see how we work on the ground. We think payroll deduction could bring in scores of new members.''

The credit union offers savings and low-cost loans.

It is particularly aimed at people on low incomes, although anyone who works or lives in the city can join.

Collection points are open on Wednesday mornings at Community House, Holly Park, Ushaw Moor, and on Fridays from noon to 1.30pm at St Nicholas Church, Market Place, Durham.

The union held its official launch at the Gala Theatre.

As well as new members, the union is on the look-out for volunteers. Anyone interested should call (0191) 384 9133.
