TWO primary schools are celebrating success after receiving a Healthy Schools Award.

St Andrew's Primary School, Henknowle, and St Joseph's RC Primary School, Coundon, were presented with their certificates during end-of-term ceremonies on Friday.

Bishop Auckland MP Derek Foster presented the award to pupils at St Andrew's School and praised their efforts.

Later he said: "They are one of the very few schools in the country to get this award and I would like to congratulate all the pupils and staff at the school. It is a tremendous achievement."

Pupils from St Joseph's were presented with their award by Darlington and Durham Healthy Schools Award co-ordinator Chris Scorer, who was impressed with the pupils' attitude to healthy eating.

She said: "The school has worked very hard for this and I would like to say well done to everybody involved."

The youngsters at St Joseph's were also presented with the Wear Walking for Health silver and bronze awards, for walking five and ten miles respectively.

Other honours were given out to those who took part in football tournaments, a table-tennis festival and a dance festival.
