ONE of the trophies to be presented at a cross-country run to be staged later this month will be in memory of a man who developed a deep affection for Weardale.

Bill and Una Garraway, who were foster parents to Michael Corner when he lived in the County Durham dale, have decided to donate the trophy to the men's winner of the cross-country which will be run at St John's Chapel Show on Saturday, August 30.

The trophy has been specially made by Weardale wood turner Matt Roffe.

Michael, who died aged 22 from leukaemia, spent several of his teenage years in Weardale with the Garraways.

"He adored the dale and the way of life here and frequently described his time here as the best years of his life," said Mrs Garraway. "We thought presenting this trophy would be one way of showing his appreciation of his love for Weardale."

It will be only the second time the 2.2-mile cross-country event has been staged at the agriculture show. It replaced the old fell run, which was abandoned because of safety fears over parts of the course.

The cross-country covers some of the most spectacular scenery in the North and has trophies and cash prizes in three classes - men's, ladies and juniors (under 18s). It has also attracted sponsorship from the Newcastle-based Dutton Forshaw motor group.

Entry in all classes costs £1.50 and they will be accepted before and on show day. For more information contact Joan Warriner on (01388) 537606.
