Billingham Wolves were involved in as close English Under-19 North A League encounter at Forum Ice Arena.

Kingston Predators were the visitors and came away narrow 7-6 victors. The win gaining revenge for Wolves 8-4 victory in Hull earlier in the season.

Six goals were shared in the opening period and Andrew Thornton put Wolves ahead after four minutes. He added a second at 13.54 on the powerplay after Kingston had equalised. Kingston scored twice to lead 3-2 before James Udell tied the scores five seconds from the first interval.

Wolves twice went ahead during the middle period through Steven Pritchard and Stuart Gibbon only for Kingston to go back on level terms at 5-5, this coming by the game's halfway stage. Udell's second goal of the game in the 53rd minute restored the Wolves' lead to 6-5. Kingston went ahead for the second time in the match with goals at 57.41 and 58.19.

As much as Wolves tried to snatch a late equaliser Kingston held on.

At Under-14 North A Sunderland Commanches slipped to a second straight defeat going down 2-10 at Telewest Arena against Nottingham Tigers. The visitors with a 100 per cent record and league leaders took a 2-0 lead with goals in the opening minute. Tigers had doubled their advantage to 4-0 by the end of the first period.

Nottingham added a further three during the middle period and had gone 6-0 ahead before Nathan Salem opened Commanches' account at 31.57. Tigers scored again when Grant Sharp struck Sunderland's second reply after 37 minutes.

A goal from Tigers' Robert Lachowicz in the final minute gave him his double hat trick and Nottingham a 10-2 victory.

Sunderland Mohicans had a convincing 13-0 victory over Nottingham Ice Cats in English Under 14 North B League. The opening goal came on the powerplay at 06.49 from Jack Watkins and three minutes later Jake Roberts and Jay Haisell had made it 3-0. Joshua Lalande increased the leads to 4-0 by the end of the first period. Four goals in five minutes in the middle period from Daniel Coffey, Watkins, Emma Hall and Haisell extended the advantage to 8-0.

Mohicans continued to press forward and struck the net five times. In the final period. Lalande (2), and Watkins completed their hat tricks and a brace from Callum, Davies rounded off the scoring.

Matthew Rye and Evie Roberts faced only four shots between them, to share a shut-out.

Sunderland Apaches only playing challenge matches at Under 10 level because of insufficient players to register to play at A league defeated Solihull Saints 16-0 in the Midlands on Saturday.

The scoring began on the powerplay on the two minute mark with a Dale Sharp strike. He added a second also a powerplay goal at 06.33. Luke Shanks added a hat trick plus a further double from Sharp as Well as Sean Bambling, and Matthew Thrimble scored for a 9-0 lead at the end of the first period.

It was a similar story in the final period as Apaches converted their opportunities. Jamie Peterson (2) Thrimble, Lee Gill (2), Sharp and Shanks to complete the scoring. The goals tally coming from 24 shots on Saints net while Mark Watson in Apaches goal faced nine shots for her shut-out.

Whitley Arrows were in action twice at the weekend in English Under-12 North a League. They are still without a point from six matches for the young side. On Saturday Arrows visited Ice Sheffield where they went down 13-0 to Sheffield Lasers.

A spirited opening period restricted Lasers to a single goal and four in the middle period, David Lawrence in the Whitley net faced 69 shots during the game and made some fine saves to keep the final score tally respectable.

Hillheads was the venue on Sunday when Arrows hosted Kingston Rivermen. Kingston like Sheffield will be among the title contenders and went away with both points from a 15-0 victory.

Rivermen went ahead at 05.05 and led 3-0 at the first interval. Their experience told in the second period as they went 10- 09ahead after 15 minutes.

Five further goals came in the final period to complete the scoring. David Lawrence and Joseph Harley shared the netminding duties facing 50 shots while at the other end Whitley managed 13 shots on goal.

Billingham Falcons without an Under 14 North A League fixture this weekend travelled to visit North B League side Sheffield Sabres at Ice Sheffield. Sabres mid-table in their league went ahead after 77 seconds. It was a lead that they held on to until two minutes remaining coach Andy Finn scored a much deserved equaliser.

English National Hockey League North

Whitley Warriors halted their run of five successive league and cup defeats by defeating lowly Grimsby Buffaloes 17-1 at Hillheads. Garry Dowd, Simon Burns and Lee Baxter were still missing from the line-up while Ben Campbell, Paul Watson, Ian Sproat, Gareth Hughes and Philip Atherton all returned.

Back-up netminder was Calvin Khass with Burns unavailable, Stephen Winn was making his first appearance of the season.

The match was delayed by 15 minutes due to the Zamboni ice machine breaking down and the spare machine going on to toe the first off the ice. Andrew Carter scored the first of his five goals on the night to put Whitley ahead at 07.30.

Grimsby were level at 11.14 and a minute later Paul Graham restored the lead. Warriors were 11-1 ahead by the end of the second period which included Gareth Hughes' first ever Warriors goal. Ian Sproat, Andrew Robinson and Stephen Winn scored their first Warriors goals of the season.

Billingham Bombers travel to Flintshire Freeze on Sunday also Freeze going well this season. Second place with only one defeat from six games they have gained a few players following closure of Altrincham Ice Rink.

Sunderland Chiefs are also on the road on Sunday when they are at Blackburn Hawks for a challenge match.
