HUNDREDS of balloons were released on Saturday at York City FC's Bootham Crescent ground as part of a campaign to teach young people how to avoid dangerous situations.
The balloon release was part of BBC York's Follow the Rainbow Appeal, which was launched following the death of York teenager, Caroline Stuttle, while backpacking in Australia last year.
Caroline, 19, fell from a bridge in Bundaberg, Queensland, after apparently being mugged.
A man has been arrested and charged with her murder.
The balloons were released by Caroline's mother, Marjorie, and brother, Richard, before York's 1-0 derby win over Doncaster.
Each balloon cost £1, with local schools keeping 20p of the proceeds. The balloon that travels the greatest distance will win its owner £50. The appeal has already raised more than £35,000.
It will pay for a personal safety video and other educational materials to be used in schools and colleges across North Yorkshire.
