A PUB immortalised in the Geordie anthem Blaydon Races is to change its name.

Balmbra's pub, in Newcastle's Cloth Market, is to be converted into a 1980s theme bar called Reflex.

The pub's new owner, Mitchell and Butler, of Birmingham, runs the Reflex chain and will open the bar next Thursday with 80s decor, music and staff wearing clothes from the era.

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "It's a shame because the song and the pub are a tradition and I am sure fans will be disappointed."

The modern day Blaydon Road Race starts at the pub each year.

Organiser Jim Dewar is concerned the pub chain does not appreciate the significance of the name.

He said: "This is a ridiculous name as Balmbra's has terrific significance for all on Tyneside."

But Mitchell and Butler said it wants to preserve the significance of the building. Janice Clarke, for the firm, said: "We are considering how we can further incorporate Balmbra's in the new signage at the bar."
