RAIL passengers watched in horror as a man was killed by a train this weekend.
The train struck a man on the tracks as it pulled into Heworth Metro station, in Gateshead.
A police spokeswoman said: "The train was evacuated and some people who saw the incident were taken to hospital suffering from shock."
The accident happened at about 8.45pm on Saturday. Police cordoned off the station while they carried out investigations.
Last night, officers were interviewing witnesses and viewing security camera footage to find out how the man came to be on the tracks.
