GLORIOUS Goodwood by name and, with Darasim and his stablemates, glorious too for Mark Johnston, who shines at the course.

Thursday saw the Middleham maestro with the first, second and fourth in the Goodwood Cup, keeping up his fine record at the track. Joe Fanning rode Darasim from the front in this Group 2 event and he was never threatened, readily justifying his 11-8 favouritism.

Stablemate Royal Rebel rewarded at 14-1 in second under Johnny Murtagh, while Double Obsession and John Egan were fourth.

David Nicholls took the Stewards' Sprint at Goodwood on Friday with Merlin's Dancer, son Adrian up.

On Saturday, John Quinn sent down Fantasy Believer to be a close-up second in the Vodafone Stewards' Cup, while Tom Eaves on the Brian Ellison-trained Artistic Style was third in the apprentice race which closed the meeting.

Johnston was in fine form all week and Kingsley House winners came thick and fast, with Stanley Chin partnering Toby's Dream at Carlisle and Jane Jubilee at Musselburgh on Thursday afternoon and evening respectively. Sunday found doughty Scott's View battling in Munich, fourth in the Group 1 ten-furlong event under Chin.

Joe Fanning won on Baileys Dancer on Monday night at Carlisle, Kevin Darley was in the Peter Savill silks aboard Spy King at Newcastle on Wednesday and Richard Hills partnered Hamdan Al Maktoum's youngster Regga to victory at Pontefract the same afternoon.

Sadly, stable jockey Keith Dalgleish startled his friends and colleagues by retiring suddenly from the saddle on Saturday night. The youngster, just 21, is 6ft 1in tall and has struggled to maintain a low weight. We hope that, after a break, this good young horseman returns to the saddle in the more forgiving (weight-wise) field of jumping.

Patrick Haslam sent Kinnaird over to France and his top notch filly found just one too good for her in the Prix de Psyche, a Group 3 event over ten furlongs at Deauville on Tuesday. The Dr Devious filly, partnered by Kevin Darley, was just a length behind Quilanga, the unbeaten German raider trained by Andreas Wohler. Kinnaird may return for the Prix de la Nonette if the ground is soft, Haslam said.

James Bethell had recently claimed Hearthstead Dream from the Johnston yard and chose Fanning to partner this one to win at Ripon. Wednesday's winner, Little Bob, was homebred by Robert Gibbons out of his Lincoln-winning mare, Hunters of Brora.

Richard Fahey has again been in a purple patch with six winners this week, including Sunday's Chester double, while Sessay trainer David Nicholls sent out a good batch this week, none more popular among Middleham fans than Zietzig at Thirsk.

Kelly Harrison, 20, now his secretary, partnered this to land the ladies' race. She is the daughter of Alan and Gill Harrison, former trainer and well-known horsewoman, and was gaining her seventh career success. She also won this race two years back on Italian Affair.

Jedd O'Keeffe, who showed signs recently of a return to form, had his first double at Newcastle. Alan Swinbank saddled his 100th training winner this week. David Barron is in irrepressible form with no fewer than five good wins.
