A NORTH-EAST firefighter is preparing to represent Britain at an international contest.
Alan Nixon, 40, of Darlington, will compete in several cycling categories at the World Firefighter Games, in Sheffield, this year.
Mr Nixon began racing at the age of 16 and this is the first time he has entered the games.
He said: "The training is pretty tough. I do a lot of stamina-based work about three or four times a week, hill climbs and shorter interval rides.
"I am competing in the 30 to 40 age category, so hopefully I will be able to get a medal."
