Investigations continue into elderley woman's death

DETECTIVES are continuing to investigate the mysterious death of a frail elderly woman.

Emergency services were called to a house in Castle Terrace, Richmond, North Yorkshire, on Wednesday morning.

The woman, named locally as 80-year-old widow Jean Metcalfe, was pronounced dead at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

A 70-year-old man, who is understood to have been Mrs Metcalfe's lodger, was arrested and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police have not yet formally identified Mrs Metcalfe.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Close family members are still being informed about the death and the inquest has yet to open and adjourn.

"Police inquiries to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing."
