THE first anniversary of the disappearance of university chef Claudia Lawrence has been marked by further appeals for information.

In particular, her family called for people to come forward even if it meant compromising an existing relationship.

Miss Lawrence, who would now be 36, was last seen near her home in Heworth, York, on March 18, last year.

She was last heard from on the telephone at about 8.10pm, but failed to arrive for her 6am shift at York University the next morning.

One feature of the police inquiry has been revelations about her complex private life, which detectives believe hold the key to the mystery.

Yesterday, her sister, Ali Sims, told GMTV: “I know that some people, if they were in a relationship and had a relationship with Claudia... I am sure they will want to save their existing relationship.

“But I think they should put that aside. They need to come forward.”

Police are trying to trace a man they know was with Miss Lawrence until 4am or 5am two days before she went missing.

He is not believed to be the same man she was having a casual sexual relationship with at the time of her disappearance.

Miss Lawrence, whose parents come from Darlington, was raised in Malton, North Yorkshire.

Her mother, Joan, said she hoped for even the smallest amount of information on her daughter to spare her another year like the previous one.

She said: “There must be another mum out there thinking like I do, that must know somebody, perhaps even a member of the family.

“The not knowing is just awful, it really is.”
