Health Secretary announces new Wynyard Park development

HEALTH Secretary Andy Burnham yesterday gave the go-ahead for a £464m hospital in the region.

The long-awaited decision ended speculation that the Wynyard Park project, north of Stockton, might become a victim of the expected public spending cuts.

Health bosses predict that the hospital will play a key role in the transformation of health services for people living in Hartlepool, Stockton and areas of Easington and Sedgefield.

The move will mark a significant break from the past, with many services moving out of a hospital environment and into local clinics.

It could also be a sign of things to come in the NHS, with calls this week for a cut in the number of hospital beds in England and a shift to community-based services.

The new hospital, which will replace outdated general hospitals in Hartlepool and Stockton, will provide specialist services for people in north Teesside, Hartlepool and east Durham.

The development is part of a wider programme of investment, which includes a range of improvements to local services.

Other developments include three integrated care centres in Billingham, Hartlepool and Stockton, which will provide more services, including tests, scans, outpatient appointments and treatment.

The new hospital will have an accident and emergency department, supported by a minor injury unit.

While people in Hartlepool and Stockton will have to travel far to reach the hospital, health bosses have promised to invest £10m to improve transport links.

Speaking in Hartlepool yesterday, Mr Burnham said: “In an era when resources are going to be more challenged, we are making this area a priority.

“In my view, this model is the way to go. We have to work harder to keep people out of hospital and that is not a bad thing.”

The health secretary paid tribute to the lobbying by five local MPs who helped to get the scheme approved.

He said: “Health services cannot stand still. In all parts of the country the NHS will have to ask searching questions about the best way to provide healthcare in the future.

“Where people have had the courage to propose changes that will improve health services and make them safer, the Government should back them up with the investment.

“I am here today to show my personal support for this development, and to recognise the hard work of those who have brought us to this point of being able to announce such a key scheme for these communities in the North- East.”

Wynyard Park chief executive Chris Musgrave said: “The announcement is fantastic for the region because it will lead to further investment and job creation.

“This visionary medical facility will have a very positive impact on the site and the communities we serve.

“We can now press ahead with the exciting plans that we have been developing that build on the great success we’ve had to date and reflect the fact that a world-class hospital is being built here.”

Work on the hospital is expected to start in 2012, with the first patients admitted in 2015.

This may not meet the approval of some but we are seeing a LARGE CHUNK OF PUBLIC MONEY BEING SPENT FOR THE PUBLIC

It is miles out of town, the access is poor, the travel costs for chronic patiients will be astronomical, there are no bus routes, why not on a brownfield site in billingham or hartlepool, at least the travel infrastructure is already there as are all of the utilities. It is a sop to the area and is in the wrong place. AND it will be on previously unused land.

What a brilliant idea - let's build a hospital that'll be impossible to get to at peak times. The people responsible for this piece of genius have obviously never tried to drive past Wynyard to/from the A19 at rush hour.

This is going to be fun, there is at least one road closure of the A19 /A689 almost daily, plus it gridlocks twice a day. Thats going to force ambulances from Stockton down the A177 along a road Stockton council has cut down to a single carriageway from a good quality dual carriageway. And Hartlepools ambulances will have to go even further along the A181 then down the B1278 to reach the new hospital.
Two massive own goals, unless they are going to completely rebuild the A689 and A19 junctions.

But at least it will be sited in a nice spot with nice views and it wont be surrounded by grotty ran down public sector estates.

And as for the upmarket residents of Wynyard, well they are going to enjoy the company of loads of escaping druggies, alcs and mental patients. But considering most of Wynyard is full of soccer players and doctors the escapees will be right at home.

Not just super Steve finding negatives if you bothered to read the other posts making the same valid points, 'Grandmaster'.

The fact remains that just about EVERYONE from all walks of life and of all political back grounds did not want this hospital . The peoples of both Stockton and Hartlepool both wanted to retain their own towns general hospitals.

And there are good points about it actually moving. My wife wont have as far to travel to work, but her patients will have at least another 10 miles to reach the place, at their own expense.

C,mon clever dick tell me exactly what is the point of building a brand new super hospital miles from any of its patients?. North Tees is already centrally located in Stockton , and Hartlepool sited similarily. total beds in excess of 800 and normally all fully occupied. Now they will close NTGH and Hartlepools hospitals and build only one to replace it with only 660 beds, hundreds of job loses, and in a position where its difficult for most people to get to?

Grandmaster sounds like a typical Labour fellator.
We're in a major recession and the Govt wants to spend money on what IT thinks the people want, without consultation.
There are already 2 hospitals delivering a very good service to 2 seperate communities.
Sounds more like a hollow pre-election promise to buy votes in the short term.

I endorse all the transport issues reported having witnessed the A19/A689 interchange congestion frequently. Putting Traffic Lights on the Roundabout will not help and I worry that ambulances will have to try and get through the congestion with patients who might be close to death,. I said that an access road at the rear of the hospital to the A19 North of the interchange should be provided, the planners at Hartlepool BC did not endorse this. Also the so called Tees Valley Metro will not go anywhere near it, unlike James Cook in Mboro. This isn't surprising as that ill conceived scheme just seeks to spin what is essentially nothing more than repositioning a few stations on all the existing railway lines rather than building new ones to places not served by Rail Travel.

We had a £67 million hospital recently built in Bishop Auckland which is now little more than a first aid box. This new suppa duppa Hospital will be paid for through PFI and will end up costing over £1000 million.Mark my words this will be a giant white elephant and access will be impossible.

In Stockton the people who will lose out most are the poorest and those most needy in society. No longer for example with the 4 large public housing estates of Roseworth, Ragworth, Bluehall and Hardwick has easy local access to instant healthcare that was provided by North Tees.
They face a drive or a long bus ride at best, adding more indirect costs to their already meagre living allowances.
Also large numbers of basic workers face either losing their jobs or face a long commute to the new hospital. Most of the Kitchen Staff, Cleaners, Porters, etc and other low paid workers with face bigger bills or the loss of their jobs.

How is this LABOUR concept going to help the community?

Going to the other side of the NTGH catchment area the people of Yarm and Ingleby Barwick are going to be even further seperated by distance from medical care.
How is this going to help the community.

Moving on all the senior doctors have to live within 8 miles of their jobs, they now face having to move house just to keep their jobs.
How is that going to help the community.
Everyone patients and medical staff is going to have to travel much greater distances, using more fuel, doing more harm to the environment.
How is that going to benefit the community.

All of the above equally apply to the peoples of Hartlepool.

How does taking away two centrally placed community hospitals and replacing them with one located in the middle of nowhere benefit the community?

Just as a point of note about how utterly useless this Labour government is, They very recently spent millions putting a new roof on North tees, Millions more on internal alterations, Millions more on new double glazing, more on new car parks etc All this will be thrown aside and the tax payer taking the hit again.

They've relaised what every realiased long ago. That closing Bishops A&E and transferring people ti Darl. would put too much pressure on Darl. needing another hospital to relieve that pressure.

So it cculd be argued that they are building a new hospital to save face, rather than admit that they were wrong to close B.A.

I think some people just love to sit and complain about everything.
How the hell is a new hospital in the region a bad idea? Oh yes, because the labour government thought of it!!!! LOL@desperately sad anti-labour rants!!!

It seems that the majority of these comments on here are all against the new hospital.
There is nothing wrong with a new hospital. Hartlepool general is falling apart and so is North Tees.
Some people have to travel to James Cook because Hartlepool and North Tees have not got certain clinics.
The new hospital will take the pressure off James Cook and have new services at the new hospital.
I live in Billingham and i have to travel to Newcastle General for appointments and also James Cook. But do I winge? NO!
People of Billingham have had to travel to Hardwick for years.
So these people moaning, Is it just laziness that they cant be bothered to travel all the way to wynyard.
Well these people wont want to use the services of the new hospital when it opens will they.
