SOLDIERS have visited a primary school to help forge links with local children.
Members of the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery visited St John’s Primary School, in Darlington, yesterday.
The soldiers were given a cheque for £620, which was raised by children, staff and parents at a recent bag pack at Sainsbury’s supermarket, in Darlington.
A further £200 was also raised for Sport Relief.
The money for the soldiers will be used to buy treats for servicemen and women in Afghanistan.
It is part of an ongoing relationship between the school and 5th Regiment, which is based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.
Just before Christmas, the school sent nearly 200 shoeboxes filled with cards, letters and gifts to soldiers in Afghanistan.
Headteacher Christine Large said: “This has nothing to do with supporting the war, but is all about working together to promote peace.
“It links with our multiculturalism and building relationships with different people.”
