Authority's top earners "should take a pay cut"

THE top earners at Darlington Borough Council should take a ten per cent pay cut to help the authority get through the recession, a councillor has claimed.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Peter Freitag called for the chief executive and directors to review their own wages before making cuts to services.

Last month, cabinet members rubber-stamped cuts worth £4.7m in the budget for the coming year, which included the loss of 41 jobs.

“I’m concerned that these high-paid officials are not willing to give up anything,”

he said.“If they gave up ten per cent of their salaries it would save a lot of money.

They would be doing something that even the bankers are beginning to do.

“There needs to be a whole management structure review.

There are managers with only one person under them.

“Budgets are tight at the moment, why don’t we look at those who earn more than £80,000 a year. Some earn more than £150,000.

“The public sector is often paid much more but delivers much less than the private sector.

“They want to make cuts, but they are looking at the wrong end.

But that’s the way it always happens. The people in charge of cutting are not going to cut themselves.”

The council’s chief executive, Ada Burns, earns £156,720 a year, while director of corporate services Paul Wildsmith, director of community services Cliff Brown and director of children’s services Murray Rose earn up to £115,725. In comparison George Garlick, the chief executive of the newly-created Durham County Council unitary authority earns £200,000, while Prime Minister Gordon Brown earns £187,611.

Councillor John Williams, the council’s Labour leader, hit back at Coun Freitag’s comments and accused him of trying to generate publicity for the Liberal Democrats ahead of the General Election, adding: “What Coun Freitag is saying is nothing to do with the council’s senior management, it is all about Coun Freitag acting as a front for Councillor Mike Barker, the Liberal Democrat candidate in the coming General Election. Lib Dems simply want to generate a sound bite story for local press.

“Sensible Darlington people will not be taken in by this.”

Councillor Williams has hit the nail right on the head. Why should any council officer give up any of their earned income? I imagine that the council's most senior officers are working so much harder because over the last couple of years when officers have left many have not been replaced for budgetary reasons, but the workload at least remains the same and has often grown.

If Cllr Frietag was doing his job properly he would have known this.

Maybe Cllr Frietag might like to set an example and donate 10% of his company's profits to subsidise the council's budget tensions if he's really bothered.

Councillors taking a 10% paycut is equivalent to one person loosing their job! As the council are looking to make people redundant and make job cuts surely this would help the people at the bottom of the scale who are the first ones to go..................
...you never hear of a director loosing their job!! It also has to be said it would be interesting to see the expense claims that the councillors are claiming...........c
an cuts be made there also??!!

i think this has come just a little too late, according to the government we are over the recession! but at the end of the day if a few p'ple have to take pay cuts to keep other p'ple in their jobs i think they should be more than happy to the last thing we need is more p'ple in the dole queue! i fully understand that someone giving up 10% of £150,000 is alot but if two p'ple earning that ammount give up that 10% they could be saving 1 or 2 p'ples jobs who maybe dont earn as much but would rather be earning and providing for their families than be job hunting worrying about what the future holds. whilst the p'ple who were earning £150,000 are still living quite comfotably on £135,000.

Hey - why don't we ALL give up 50% of our salaries???
Or stop working half the hours we do? Or both?
We could slash unemployment at a stroke and...oh, hang on, it's a stupid idea, that's why.
Freitag's just trying to get free publicity for 'Barking Mike' Barker's doomed election campaign. I see...

As you were!!!!!

i agree with both councillors. Though why don't they slash the petrol allowance for councillors going to meetings etc. They could either walk or in Councillor Frietag's case as he is over 60 he could use his free bus pass as could the other councillors who are over 60, before the tories abolish the free bus pass, winter heating allowance and free tv licence for over 75s.

I think ada could survive on 100k a year. All public sector workers on 30k+ should take a paycut.

Coun. Freitag is correct in his call for a 10% wages cut for the directors of the council. I can't see how this can be seen as being political support for the LibDems. A cut would provide more money where it is required, like in the front line services of the council. Coun. Williams seems to be just playing at politics for his own ends!

“Sensible Darlington people will not be taken in by this.” says councillor Williams. Hate to say it, but I agree.
It's election time, people, and all sorts of mind-numbing rubbish is coming our way as they all fall over themselves to be our best mates whilst slagging off the opposition.

Why would freitag wait untul the council budget was approved (as voted for by him and the other no-hope dems!!!!) before making such a daft headline-seeking statement???
Or was he pushed???LOL@cheap campainging!!!!
